Headstone Information

Bell Monument in Beloit and Manhattan

These are the ones we looked at and prefer.

*Photo Examples are provided below the information

Note that I visited and priced at 3 different locations including Beloit, Downs and Clay Center.  All were close in price.

Bells in Beloit, in my opinion, are the most adept professionally with in-house skilled employees and equipment, as well as knowledge of stone. They are also most serious about the longevity per setting the stone.  Their pricing was most inclusive without a number of add-on costs for specific items as the others were.  Too, practically, all of our families have done business with them, so there is a good history. As well, they are the only ones that do NOT use concrete as a base for the memorial. Granite is used at all points in their setup including base, pedestal and memorial. This makes good sense as concrete has a tendency to crack and break with settling and weathering. Granite is also much heavier and stronger than concrete, which lends to more even settling.   (Note that Bell Monument there in Manhattan will have samples of nearly the same thing I saw in Beloit.)

First Choice

  • Size: 30” wide upright (granite polished on all sides) granite foundation & base

  • Stone Color:  Harvest Moon (black ) or Kings Knight (black and gray speckled)

  • Design:  3 stalks of wheat on the left side of his name; sunflower on the right side of his name. Or, a wheat / sunflower combo. The top of the stone is cut in serpentine style.       View options: Wheat - Sunflower - Scenes (PDF)

  • Name:  Set inside a banner (frosted bar) so that Kealan’s name is more visible.

  • Lettering:  includes the lettering on front, last name on the back, date of birth and death on front.

  • Cost:

    • 30” polished on all sides, includes lettering, wheat design and the sunflower, base and foundation -  $3627.00

    • 30” polished on 2 sides front and back; rough cut on sides - $3385.00 (includes same as above)

(*the rough cut is perhaps more appealing to me)

Optional costs:

For smaller 24” stone polished on 2 sides –$2566.00 (includes as listed above)

24” polished on all sides - $2758.00 (includes as listed above)

Additional Costs:

  • Adding a flower vase increases the cost by an extra $246.00.

  • Adding a scenic etching on the back is approximately $250.00.

Second Choice

  • Size:  30” Wedge, on a base (granite polished on all 2 sides (front and back) with sides rough cut.

  • Stone Color:  Harvest Moon (black ) or Kings Knight (black and gray speckled)

  • Design:  3 stalks of wheat on the left side of his name; sunflower on the right side of his name.

  • Name:  Set inside a banner (frosted bar) so that Kealan’s name is more visible.

  • Cost:  includes the lettering on front and back, date of birth and death, wheat design and the sunflower, base and foundation.

Stone Color Comparison

Note that my folk's stone is greenish in color. I'm not looking to duplicate that but feel the darker colors are more attractive, distinct and easier to see / read from a distance. The lighter and or redder colors are more difficult to read or don't match as well.  See examples of the Kings Night and Harvest Moon stone color at right.

When viewing the above PDFs, the images that most attracted my attention are marked with an X.  NOTE that any can be amended per request by Bell's in-house staff.  For example, the sunflower has only 2 wheat stalks - a third can be added. I'm partial to including both a wheat bundle and sunflower... the combo appeals to me.  I am not too attracted to most scenes as, in the example below, the fish and people look odd to me while some of the background items just don't fit in per KS.  However, the one that I marked in the PDF catches my attention as it is more Kansas-like while portraying a sense of serenity in an open space. I can go either way regarding a scene.

The Clover stone in the background is the Harvest Moon color.
